Telling SADC's Stories

GIZ asked us to take SADC’s message to 2 million of its citizens. We used innovative digital techniques to double that. We took the dense policy work of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat from the board rooms of presidents’ and ministers’ meetings, and translated it into stories showing real changes made to people’s lives.

We were selected to tell these stories through open tender by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The brief was simple – find a way to tell stories of success in a way that would reach the very people SADC was helping. We produced stories from each country in the SADC region, on cross-cutting issues ranging from infrastructure, to banking, to climate change and fisheries. Each story featured the policy work done by SADC, the regional implications, and the human beings on the ground whose life had been changed for the better.

The SADC Success Stories were published in written form and video in English, French and Portuguese. The written stories saw a print run of 7000 books and were published in 35 regional newspapers. The videos used high-quality footage, photography and custom-designed animations to tell the stories on social media as a digital campaign. Between Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the stories reached 4.2 million people.
