Gulchera was born on June 17, 1973 in Urumqi East Turkestan (Xinjiang China ) and is a Uyghur journalist, reporter & TV anchor with 25 years experience.

She is the recipient of the Sergei Magnitsky award recognized as outstanding human rights activist 2019. She also received the David Burke distinguished journalist award 2020 at RFA and the IWMF Courage in Journalism award 2020.

Confronting the global scourge of gendered online violence

Women, marginalised and non-conforming people bear the brunt of online violence around the world, while the perpetrators range from anonymous bots and trolls to world leaders seeking to chill critical journalism. Dr Julie Posetti leads a global UNESCO-commissioned study examining this freedom of expression crisis. She maps the incidence and impacts of online violence against women journalists internaitonally and issues a call for urgent action as digital assaults spill offline with potentially deadly consequences.
