Chief Executive Officer
Paula Fray
Paula Fray has worked in media for more than three decades as a journalist, editor, trainer and media manager. Paula was the first female editor of the Saturday Star newspaper in South Africa. She is currently the managing director of the pan-African media training organisation frayintermedia, which she founded in 2005. The organisation has trained journalists, media leaders, civil society organisations, government officials and corporate leaders during its decade-long existence.
She is President of The New Humanitarian news agency, a board member of Africa Check and of Accountability Lab SA. She is a Print and Digital Media SA fellow and a public representative on the Press Council of South Africa.
Paula graduated with a BJourn degree from Rhodes University and has a Woman and Law Certificate from UNISA. A recipient of the prestigious Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, she is a former member of the Nieman Foundation Advisory Board at Harvard
Chief Operating Officer
Desmond Latham
Former Editor-in-Chief at the GCIS, previously Head of Multimedia at frayintermedia.
Before that, news editor at Business Day TV, after moving from the position of Online Editor at Business Day & Financial Mail.
That’s after spending ten years as CEO of my own company called Mobile Active Digital PTY, which built mobile apps and served content to people through African telecoms companies.
I have also been a senior reporter at Radio 702, Head of Journalism at Allenby Campus, News Editor at Classic FM, Head of Radio at African Business Channel.
I have studied at Stanford in California in 1993/94 and Rhodes in South Africa in 1983/85.
Finance
Mbali Nhlengethwa
Mbali Nhlengethwa joined frayintermedia in 2018 as the bookkeeper.
She holds a National Diploma in Internal Auditing from Vaal University of Technology.
She is very ambitious and loves working with numbers.
She previously worked in an accounting firm and has more than 10 years working experience in the accounting field.
Throughout her working experience she has developed her abilities in key areas such a bookkeeping, financial and tax calculation.
Head of Marketing
Nasya Smith
Nasya Smith has a BA Honours in Journalism and Media Studies, specialising in Television and video, from the University of the Witwatersrand. As Head of Marketing at frayintermedia she develops creative and strategic marketing and advocacy activities that stretch across all platforms. Passionate about storytelling for change, she uses her skills and knowledge in visual story production and communications to achieve these goals. Nasya has experience in writing, filming, photography, audio editing, broadcast design, and specialises in video editing. She has travelled across South Africa and the SADC region telling stories and has her credits on two television-length documentaries.She has an exceptional ability to to translate clients’ needs into visual content that is on par with their vision and brand as well as international standards.
Senior Motion Designer
Laa'iqah Esau
Laa’iqah Esau is an innovative and vibrant designer with a love for bringing ideas and concepts to life. With a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Multimedia Design she has acquired skills in design, layout, user experience, user interface, motion graphics, illustration and branding. With these specialised skills, Laa’iqah is able to interpret clients’ needs and translate them for a range of visual platforms.
She specialises in working on existing brands and building on them in a way that strengthens the existing imagery, while breathing new life into them with multimedia. At frayintermedia she works as a Motion Designer and services our clients’ design needs, and builds motion graphics and animations for our video products.
Writer
Ntombi Mkandhla
Ntombi Mkandhla is passionate about language and communication and holds a BA Language degree from the University of Pretoria, majoring in English and Spanish and a BA Honours in Journalism and Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. At frayintermedia, she oversees the company's coverage of African journalism and media.
