Black Wednesday: The banning of independent media in apartheid South Africa

October 19, 1977, is remembered in South African history as Black Wednesday, a day when the apartheid government clamped down on independent media. That day, the government also banned Black Consciousness organisations and detained many activists.

October 19 is now remembered as #NationalPressFreedomDay in present-day South Africa. It is a day to reflect on how far the country has come in realising press freedom and how the media still plays its part in strengthening democracy in the country.
