The South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) and Wits University have partnered with frayintermedia to offer a Media Management Skills programme for women funded by the Fibre Processing & Manufacturing SETA (fp&m).
fp&m SETA Research, Planning and Reporting General Manager PK Naicker, said this is an opportunity to address South Africa's transformation imperatives.
The programme was officially launched on October 17, 2018, at the fp&m offices in Killarney, Johannesburg.
Forty women have been selected to participate in the management training with 20 participating in a Wits University course currently underway. The programme is supported by coaching.
The aim of the programme is to increase the number of women leaders in media leadership by equipping them with the necessary skills to manage.
fp&m SETA, Research, Planning and Reporting General Manager PK Naicker, expressed his gratitude to frayintermedia, Wits University and SANEF for making the course possible.
“The media plays an important role in our communities; hence we have a role to play in creating positive change,” said Naicker, noting that the National Development Plan specifically notes the critical role women can play.
frayintermedia Managing Director Paula Fray said the process of increasing the number of women in media leadership needed to be supported from the top echelons of management with active plans and programmes to ensure impact.
“We need commitment from the top and then such programmes must not only be consistently and forcibly communicated but must be monitored and measure and those in leadership held accountable,” said Fray.
“Having women as leaders in the media can create positive impact not only in terms of management but also in the way that stories are told,” she said.
frayintermedia has played an integral role in the developing and implementing the Media Management Skills programme.
