On the pursuit of improving the state of community media in South Africa through increasing recognition and use of local news by local reporters from the community. The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), an agency of the Department of Communications funded 100 journalists to enrol in the Press Code e-learning course between October 2016 and June 2017. The eight week-long Press Code course provided by frayintermedia was designed to enforce the application of the code of ethics for the South African print and online media.
Over 40 community media publications and radio stations nation-wide participated in the course.
The course is self-paced because of the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the newsroom schedule. Journalists are able to manage their own work at their own pace through the course.
This funding was granted to journalists working at independently owned community media houses all over the country. Many of these publications are black owned and are predominantly circulated in the rural areas throughout the county.
The learners who passed the course were awarded with a certificate of completion and had their data reimbursed for demonstrating their commitment to the course.
